In this course, you will thoroughly yet at a relaxed pace explore one of the world's oldest and richest languages — Sanskrit. The course curriculum is designed to cover the fundamentals of the Sanskrit language at the A1 level, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale:

The program is licensed by the Riga Education and Information Methodology Centre (Permit No. RIMCK-25-614-ail) and is intended for anyone interested, with no prior knowledge required.

Course Goal and Benefits

The primary objective of the course is to master Devanāgarī script and provide foundational knowledge of Sanskrit grammar using a structured approach and learning materials specifically developed for this purpose. This methodology allows you to acquire knowledge systematically, step by step, turning the learning process into an exciting intellectual adventure.

As a result, you will be able to independently read and understand simple sentences both in the original Devanagari script and in the International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST). Furthermore, the Harvard-Kyoto transliteration system will enable you to find and translate unfamiliar Sanskrit words using digital dictionaries.

Course Syllabus

1. Script and Phonetics:

• The Devanagari script: writing phonemes, precise pronunciation, and the principles of forming ligatures (conjunct characters);
• Transliteration standards: the Harvard-Kyoto system (for digital dictionaries) and the International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST) for printed and electronic texts;
• Sound alterations: Sandhi rules and consonant retroflexion.

2. Foundational Grammar and Morphology:

• Sentence syntax;
• Noun declension and case functions within a sentence;
• Conjugation of thematic verbs in the simple present tense (Parasmaipada and Ātmanepada), as well as the simple past tense, imperative, and optative moods; active and passive voices;
• Declension paradigms and usage of the most frequently used noun stems and pronouns;
• Language structure: An introduction to Indo-European ablaut (vowel gradation) and the core principles of word formation (prefixed verbs, adjectives).

Format and Learning Materials

• Course duration: 32 sessions (64 academic hours).
• Session duration: 90 minutes.
• Delivery: Classes take place online via the Zoom platform or in person (depending on the selected format).
• Each online session is recorded, allowing for asynchronous participation.
• All study materials — presentations, declension/conjugation paradigms, and vocabulary lists with translations — are specifically developed and adapted for learning in Latvian.
• After each session, learning materials are uploaded to a shared learning platform and remain at your disposal for life.

In this course, we do not merely study the ancient language of Sanskrit, we also bring its application to life within a modern context. Knowledge of Sanskrit grants access to a vast literary heritage that has evolved over millennia within the cultural space of the Indian subcontinent, ranging from the world's oldest literary monuments — the Vedas — to countless treatises of India's various philosophical schools, epics, and poetry. Similarly, a significant portion of post-Vedic literature consists of a rich array of manuscripts in fields such as Yoga, medicine (Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani), Indian performing arts and dance, astrology, and more.

The content is designed to be a valuable resource for your professional activities, as well as your personal and academic growth:

• Linguistic Roots and Wisdom: You will discover Sanskrit's unique place within the Indo-European language family. An academic understanding of language history will help you recognize the cognates and structural relationships between Latvian and Sanskrit words and forms, revealing the deeper layers of language.
• From Terminology to Insight: Deepen your vocabulary and understand sentence structure. This is essential for yoga teachers, dance masters, Ayurveda specialists, and astrologers to precisely interpret and utilize ancient terms, and to recite mantras with an understanding of their innermost essence.
• Modern Tools for an Ancient Language: You will learn how to work with digital tools and dictionaries, enabling you to independently read and analyze adapted texts. These skills will grant you the freedom to access primary sources yourself and find inspiration in them for your work or research.

Your Takeaways at the End of the Course

Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a certificate for the attainment of the A1 level. Optionally, you can take a final exam to receive a percentage-based grade. As a result, you will be able to independently read and understand simple ancient Indian texts. Afterward, you may continue your studies at the A2 and B1 levels, which will also provide the opportunity to join slow-reading groups for various texts.
